Diffusion Theory - Emoticon Evolution

In the past, there was an invention created that changed communication by texting forever.  With the invention of the Emoticon im going to further describe how Diffusion Theory can represent it.  Starting off im going to write out the bell curve and then describe it in detail after.

The Bell Curve of Emotions (and When To Let Go) ~ Exploring Deeper

Written Bell Curve- Evolution of the Emoticon:  (time- far left) (penetration- far right)

Pioneers: (Experimental)

-First created in 1982.  Email users send this :-) and :-( to show emotion.

Early Adopters: (Take-off)

-Another version of the Emoticon is created in 1999 called Emoji.  Email is still the main technology used to send emoticons, then cell phones are next.

Majority: (Critical Mass)

-Updated versions of the Emoticon are created between 2010-2016 by adding diversity with skin tones, emotions on faces, and same-sex icons. More people are wanting to use their phone and use emojis to express emotion.

Late Adopters: (Maturation)

-Phone users weren’t interested at first or they couldn’t afford it but they came around started using emoticons immediately.

Laggards: (Saturation)

-People that resist not buying/using a phone or people who can't afford it.

A Detailed Description of Each Point:

I believe that the Pioneers created such a unique way of communicating through email and texting that people were intrigued and wanted to try it.  Emoticons allow a certain type of emotion to be expressed through a somewhat emotionless communication format.  Also, early adopters starting using emoticons for two main reasons, the first being a trendsetter people love starting new trends and seeing things that have the potential to grow.  Much like how Apple created the Emoji.  The second reason is people were able to afford a telephone, therefore able to use the emoticon.  Some positives about using the Emoticon include using over 6 million Emoticons a day and is said to be the best adaptation to communication we have had in this era.

On the other hand, there are people who were late to the trend of using emojis or others who couldn't afford a phone to use the emoticon.  The last type of people to adapt is laggers.  These kinds of people are not interested in using new technology or are following a specific electronic free lifestyle.  Some negatives include taking a lazier way of communicating with others and it erodes the clarity of the sender.  Overall, most positive outcomes for using Emoticons outweigh the negatives.  The ways I calculate these results of positive being better than the negatives is the number of people in this world who own a cell phone and have used emojis in their day to day life.  Personally I can confidently say I use emojis multiple times throughout the day.
